Original dubstep souljah Kromestar is objectively the dubstep scene's most productive mind, notching up some 100 releases under a slew of pseudonyms including Droid and Iron Soul touching bass on Dubstep and myriad other post-garage mutated variants. Whether working in collaboration with Hatcha on the Brothers Grim project or providing beats for Durrty Goodz, Kromestar has nailed the sound of street level dubstep & grime and his beats are consequently in high demand. Released recently on his mate's Dub Star imprint, 'My Sound' is his first long player and surprisingly rammed with fresh-off-the-block riddims surpassing much of his previous output. Without the requirements for instant dancefloor gratification, he allows himself to piece together a set of deeper smoking joints with an overriding sense of skunky melancholy seeping through the hovering synth pads and blue melodica vibes. His riddims are as usual, quite exceptional, saving some of his leanest and sub-ducked patterns for this CD from the sick wobbler 'System log' to tru dub shuffle riddims on '8 Ball' or post R'n'B slink on 'Aston Martin'. This surely ranks with Cyrus' 'From The Shadows' as one of the best dubstep LP's from this end of the spectrum and comes recommended to all followers of the authentic dubstep sound.(boomkat buy here)

For all the non-vinyl heads and those who had their tastes piqued by the doublepack, your wait is over, as the Roots Of El-B CD compilation arrives just in time for the first warm breeze of spring. The Martin "Blackdown" Clarke compiled retrospective covers the work of Lewis Beadle aka El-B with a killer 15 track compilation of ultra rare white labels and lost remixes from his 2000-2002 halcyon days. As history now tells us, garage emerged as the UK's urban music style of choice after the dominance of drum'n'bass in the mid-late nineties, but during this transition period a young crew calcified around producer El-B and his Ghost recordings label out of Streatham, South London, acting as the missing link between the two styles. El-B combined the spacious flex of jungle and D'n'B's dynamic rhythms with the slink and slide of Garage style production techniques and tempos to create a typically UK centric and idiosyncratic dance music. Most notably, many of these cuts have never appeared on CD before. 'The Club' was the first release on Ghost Records, backed with the equally seminal 'Bison' and 'Two Thousand' produced with J Da Flex, it defined a tougher and more focussed direction for Garage in paralell with the nascent production of Zed Bias who was carving out a similar niche at the time. Released in 2001 for garage powerhouse Locked On, 'Serious' hooked up with MC Rolla for a sharp shock of millenial futurism with deadly bass licks and tucked polyrhythmic kinks that blew the rest of the crowd out of the club, while 'Express' solidifies garage rhythms into a mad effective minimalism with a paucity of elements pivoting around those clocking wood blocks that have come to influence a whole generation of dubstep and post-dubstep producers. While tracks like 'Digital' take hardstepping Ed Rush D'n'B styles and reconfigure them for a slinkier tempo, his classic refix of Zed Bias' 'Neighborhood' swings in the opposite direction with a legendary revision of a garage staple with pure feminine pressure. Without the push from Martin Clarke, tracks like the killer 'Cruiser' or 'Among The Stars' may never have seen the light of day again, or recieved such a high profile presence so it's thanks to all involved with this project for bringing it to the wider attention of the world. 'Traffic' gets this latest Brendon Moeller transmission underway, hitting an appropriately fast-paced tempo propelled by modulating dub stabs. As the piece progresses the mix retains an unfussy sense of economy, but the energy levels seem to go ever upwards. 'Slight Transition' comes as an intriguing and pared down journey into spacious echo reflections, but this finely honed minimalism is ruptured by 'Fixer's vibrant synth soloing and the luxurious echo deck experiments of 'Safari'.(boomakt,buy here)

The tracks Aloeswood and Ultraviolet World were previously released as Part 8 and Part 9, respectively, on Spectral Network's Defragment: Part 7-10. Aloeswood is an edited version of Part 8.
Deepchord's Rod Modell is a fascinating character, operating outside of any regular techno circles and in possession of a rich and genuinely beautiful back catalogue that has kept him away from the more predictable manoeuvres so many of his contemporaries have fallen into. His love of suggestive sound sources and analogue processes is clearly not born out of any "fashionable" urges, but a true and rich fascination with the sonic detritus that litters our world and the space above us, as far removed from the pristine machinations of Minimal techno as can be imagined. Modell has had a busy and highly productive 12 months and is now more visible than at any point over his decade long career, finding acclaim and appreciation via his involvement in releases for Echospace, Modern Love, Echocord, SYNTH and Silentes, but it is with this remarkable album for Plop that he appears to have sunk in to his most immersive and reductive frame of mind, producing a staggering series of frayed dub variations for contemplative and at times propulsive ingestion. The album opens with the incredible "Aloeswood", a stretch of rusting chords and found sounds filtered into oblivion, creating a kind of aural tension that builds and radiates a narcotic hum of distorion and space that sets the framework for much of the album's uneasy bliss. By the time "Cloud Over" kicks into life Modell is back in the presence of more traditional percussive arrangements and neon lights, but there's something impossibly fragile and uneven about the production here, like the mastertapes have been left out to slowly decompose and take on the elements, leaving almost audible battle scars that arrange themselves like rings betraying the age and struggles of a freshly cut tree. "Ultraviolet World" is another breathtaking layering of field recordings and machine made processes, with dense and impossibly woozy side effects slowly reconfiguring your perception through repetition and barely noticeable change, the mark of a confident and purposeful artist at the peak of his powers. If you're a follower of Modell's transmissions under his own and deepchord/echospace monikers you'll have an idea of what to expect from this wonderful album, but the development of sound and ease with which Modell treads on more obtuse terrain should also draw you in if you're one of the many people out there still in awe of the works of Thomas Köner and Wolfgang Voigt's peerless Gas project. Stunning music - an utterly essential purchase.

Weaving the random playfulness and natural skeez of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s lyrics into their patented Brit-Dub sound, an erratic, disturbing and exciting form emerges. Perry rarely sounds this smooth and the On-U Sound has newly expanded depth and production value, seemingly influenced by classic Perry work. This incarnation of “Blackboard Jungle” has a brooding heavy sound, while somehow remaining atmospheric. Here’s the bonus: you can almost see Lee Perry on a street corner somewhere in London muttering, “Respect my shit, respect my piss”. He’s also there to warn of the rampant Fungus STD (Fungus Rock)? Chalk it up to some healthy clowning, as also heard on “I Foo China” - love that Black Uhuru chorus vibe too. “I Do Voodoo” feels like a final transmission from the Dub-Ship lost in 1975.
All the tracks featuring Ari Up, including “Surrender Dub” and “Idiot Dub”, rip into some excellent dubstep sounds, immediately re-energizing the rest of the album. Taking the time to re-sample Ari’s vocals fold her into the composition beautifully. Throughout the track selections there is a strong but expected current of activism, including an “Evil Burma Dub” laced with South Asian instrumentation. I had a taste of this album before the review as the vaguely familiar melody of “Chrome Optimism” made DJ rotations. The Dub saga continues with re-dubs and re-mixes of the earlier Perry tracks accompanied by whole new tracks that, if left off of this album, would have been missed.
The additional elements within the re-dubs are exciting and engaging, taking the trip into an alternate dimension back from Planet Dub. While the original Perry tracks are irreverent, the collaborative dubs take on new life between the stars; just tripping-out all over Dubblestandart’s new material. Completely new rhythms enter and attack the powerful, established themes in all the remixes. G-Corp’s dubstep remix brings a third new life to “Chase The Devil” on this album alone. “I Do Voodoo (Rob Smith RSD Rmx)” goes to the darker, space wars side you might have expected from the original. “Wadada Means Love (Featuring Prince Far-I & Trueman Chewstick) [Tom Watson Dubstep Rmx]” takes on a Leftfield sound, and “Blackboard Jungle Dub [Subatomic Sound System Dubstep Rmx]” is a banging dubstep track with a genuine tone missed by most in the genre. The re-treads of previous Dubblestandart material also burn well for fuel.
Overall, a legitimate step forward for Dubblestandart. Respect their sh*t. (by DJ Memo properlychilled)

king tubby meets scientist - in a revival dub (2009)
King Tubby and his apprentice Scientist produced some of the most seminal dub works of 70's Jamaican reggae. 'In A Revival Dub' features the pair of studio masters tackling Jah Thomas' 'Midnight Rock' and other productions with a sack of killer reductions and abstractions for the dance. Nkumah 'Jah' Thomas was one of the finest deejays to come out of mid-70's Jamaican reggae scene, honing his skills in the Three Mile and Waterhouse districts of Western Kingston in the sink or swim world of the demanding dancehall crowds. His biggest tune 'Midnight Rock' was originally released on Alvin Ranglin's GG label and featured the Roots Radics in heavy form under his direction, crafting a hit riddim strictly for the dance. Scientist and King Tubby duly set about his riddims with some 14 back and forth versions, with Tubby applying his pristine sound to separate the sounds into cavernous shapes while Scientist makes his versions swelter in drowsily blissful soundscapes to let your mind and feet wander.
