One of Germany's coolest labels, Steve Bug's Poker Flat Recordings, is about to turn ten and the celebration won't go by unnoticed. Birthday boy Bug and his label mates have prepared a lovely present to hand out: a 3CD compilation with the hottest Poker Flat releases of the past 10 years in a number of various formats.
This release will be made available in, here we go, a Limited Edition 3CD box with a free poker deck (!) and sticker, a 2xCD package, a double LP, and a digital release. Yup, the Poker Flat Posse doesn't mess around when it comes to issuing fancy stuff. We received the 3xCD package and it has become quite a enjoyable release to say the least. The package consists out of 2 CD's, of which the first one comes with exclusive tracks that more or less represent the future of the label from the hands of both new as long serving label signings. Bug himself gets things going with the funky My Chihuahua Bites, after which we encounter more hotness by the ever brilliant Martini Brothers, Cle, Patrick Chardronnet and (of course) Guido Schneider and John Tejada. CD 2 includes a number of 'current' tracks, aka releases that have been among the hottest the label has had on offer over the past few months. There's Ryo Murakami hit EP Down The Sky, DJ T's mysteriously funking After Dark and Simon Flower's Phosphenes, which, upon listening, reveal their timeless club vibe.
The third CD is a bonus mix on which Steve puts some of the label's classic tracks on display, including Trentemøller's seminal classic Always Something Better (the vocal version with Richard Davis), Jackmate's drummy Recall, Steve Bug's own deep and dark A Night Like This and the ever weird studio droppings of the Detroit Grand Pubahs, cleverly reworked by Joakim.
Poker Flat is right on the money with the release of this 'greatest hits' collection. The label offers some of their best material across three CD's, and it's pretty nice to hear the progress the label and its artists have been making in the last decade. A must-have release for fans of the label!

Hot Chip - A Bugged Out Mix (2009)
Electro geek chic pioneers Hot Chip are due to curate a new instalment of the mix series 'Bugged Out'. Hot Chip are one of the most celebrated groups in dance music. Blending the liquid funk of Prince with some left field beats the band have hit upon a unique formula.
Last year's album 'Made In The Dark' bowled over critics with its breath-taking sonic ambition. It also helped somewhat that the album spawned one of the year's biggest singles in 'Ready For The Floor'. The forthcoming compilation will be released through New State on April 27th. Hot Chip will follow in the footsteps of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Klaxons and Felix Da Housecat.
The full tracklisting has yet to be released but it is know that the group are said to include tracks from John Tejada, Mark Romboy, Dominik Eulberg & Gabriel Ananda and an incredible exclusive new Hot Chip tune called ‘Take It In’. Fans will no doubt fondly remember the group's DJ Kicks comp, and its versatile display of genres. This time round, the band find room for Fleetwood Mac, Luther Vandross and The Doobie Brothers in an effort to shake the party!(clashmusic) Hot Chip - A Bugged Out Mix (2009) Tracklist

Robert Hood - Minimal Nation
At long last - THE seminal Techno album re-issued after years in the wilderness, Vinyl comes with a free copy of the CD!* This album is one of the most cherished and influential pieces of electronic music ever. Upon its release in 1994 it sounded like little that had come before it, taking the first wave influences of tracky Chicago boxjams and Detroit funk-finesse before gutting them and fitting them out with a shiny new Detroit motor that clicked and whirred with a well tuned German efficiency but funked like an Afro-American. Henrik Schwarz's recent 'Grandfather Paradox' mix sets Hood's classic 'Minus' alongside other legendary minimalists like Conrad Schnitzler and Steve Reich which is very fair, but Hood's minimalism is more about funk than any academic ambitions. He knew that subtle shifts in rhythm pattern and simple hints of melody were enough to create a devastating groove without going over the top into rock style bombast that a lot of techno of the time was verging on. His tracks worked more like a circle of African drummers setting a pace and introducing repetitive phrases intuitively rather than a group of blokes with noisy machines trying to make everyone submit to their funk. This album is the perfect showcase of this restraint and innately considered organisation with the majestic 'Museum' using only maybe 3-4 individual sounds to drive dancers into a frenzy or the teased elements of 'Unix' circling each other to release small but powerful fillips of funk energy for the floor. 'Minimal Nation' is a masterclass in Detroit Future Funk, engineered by a unique mind that will continue to be copied but seldom beaten. Zomby finally follows up his Hyperdub doublepack with an album of future-shocking manoeuvres for Ramp, loaded with nine tracks of style surfing riddims and mind burrowing bleepage. In our books, this is one of the most anticipated and in-demand records of the year so far. His precocious productions since 2007 have taken R'n'B infected grime, dubstep and bassline as starting points before crumbling them with nimble digits and reassembling them in his own skunk smudged vision, practically instigating a movement behind him and seriously blazing a path into future rhythm construction. Any keen followers of the style will have noticed tracks from this album cropping up in places like Blackdown's Rinse show or in DJ sets from Kode 9 or Ikonika, most likely soundtracking those head-in-hands "WTF?!?!" type moments their recent sets have delivered. The scheme for 'One Foot Ahead Of The Other' is generally fixed around funkin' 4/4 patterns nudged, pushed and squeezed into constantly morphing shapes with a fizzing energy centre of UK rave spirit at it's core, picking up the baton from thousands of raves gone by and running headlong in the future, shooting lazers from every orifice and dripping psychoactive sweat all over the dancefloor. We'll shut up now and just let the music do the talking, but for what it's worth, this is one of the best records you'll hear this year.(boomkat, listen buy here) Zomby-One Foot Ahead Of The Other (RAMP022)
