Croydon's OG dubstep dons return with a brand
new album of standardly heavyweight subbass
dramas. It's now six years since their
template setting 'To The Rescue', and at least
10 years since their earliest releases
imagined the formula for what would become
known as dubstep. Up until recently they've
been notoriously quiet, only emerging again in
2009 with a pair of killer come-backs
including a masterful revision of Lee Perry.
That cut 'Exercising' appears on 'Quest For
The Sonic Bounty', following a clutch of
deeply layered and cinematic tracks deploying
tonnes of film samples taken from their
collective stacks of classic VHS videos. In
contrast to so many dubstep producers
nowadays, they remain true to the original
mandate of minimalism, preferring to hone in
on the essential elements of sculpted subs and
chiselled percussion, using the rich tapestry
of film dialogue and samples to fulfill
melodic signifiers of mood and atmosphere. If
Dubstep has become an obese, wobbling blur of
noises and the smell of lynx and mephedrone to
you, then this album will surely restore your
faith, or at the very least remind you how
tactile it can be. Recommended.
