The Gaslamp Killer
I found this mix floating around the ether. It comes courtesy of yet another LA based turntablist. The Gas Lamp Killer is his name and killing.. err Gas Lamps is his game? Well if a Gas Lamp was a club in the hinterland of the Hollywood Hills then he'd definitely live up to the title. This mix which was recorded for a session at Dublab is eclectic to say the least, melding breakbeat, dubstep, ethnic grooves and Nirvana all to good measure. Soon to be anointed onto the Warp Records roster, TGLK will sit neatly long side your Prefuse 73's and Flying Lotus'.

DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY Released: Apr 2009
The impeccable production outfit make a large step into Purple Wow styled synth-driven and r'n'b informed riddims with the latest for their own imprint. 'Ramp' hooks up again with one of their most successful collaborators, MC Vex who gives a sterling performance over a sparse and constantly morphing riddim fleshed out with squirts of hyper-funked synthlines, while title cut 'Trycycle' gets lean with a restlessly edited grimy banger sounding like something out of a Spyro set filtered wih a psychedlic intent. 'Bside' is the final track and the one most blatantly in thrall to Joker and co's Purple Wow sound. The crunk swinging halfstep riddim in set in place, but it's all about the flashing synths which slightly tone down Joker's exuberance but contain enough hi-end tweaks and masterful production touches to fully work in its own right. If Guido, Gemmy, Joker, Jamie Vex'd or Dabrye have been trippin your mind over the last 12 months this is unmissable.

Gaslamp Killer - Live at Hella International
Gaslamp Killer is one of our favorite abstract-type artists around these parts. Coming from the same camp as other LA artist such as Samiyam, Flying Lotus and Ras G, Gaslamp Killer doesn’t fail to deliver you a good dose of bass, off-beat rhythms, eclectic mixes, and some of the hottest shit you thought you’d never hear.
Gaslamp is back with another Podcast for favorite underground label Stones Throw. Following from amazing mix he did for their podcast in 2008 with Heliocentrics, this one does not fail to deliver either. Recorded live at VTech & Stones Throw’s Hella International party at the Miami winter music conference, this mix brings more of a party vibe to it. Still giving a good mix of beats, bass and weird noises - you’re just going to have to be patient in trying to understand what is going on with this mix if you are new to the whole “LA beat” scene.

FACT mix 64: Scratcha DVA
This Friday's(10.07.09) FACT mix comes from the presenter of Rinse FM's breakfast show and Roska's DJing partner in crime, Scratcha DVA.
Leon Smart to his mum, Scratcha's not just a quality DJ (more than any DJ in Rinse history, his show's been as much about the presenting as the music - something Smart puts down to his upbringing of Steve Jackson and Streetboy on former seminal London pirate station Kiss FM), he's one of the best producers around. 'Bullet A Go Fly', his recent single on Keysound, is the only realistic competition to 'Next Hype' in the Grime Track of the Year stakes, and 'I'm Leaving', feat. Alanha, is a vocal anthem played by everyone from Spyro to Geiom.
Currently collaborating with Cooly G, Roska and D-Malice on tracks, he's also contributed to Logan Sama's Eath 616 imprint and is part of UK Funky unit the Fantastic Four, with Roska, D-Malice and Ill Blu. In particular you should watch out for him and Roska's remix of So Solid Crew's '21 Seconds' and solo track 'Key to my House', both of which should end the year as anthems. Did we mention he used to make jungle with a pre-grime Terror Danjah, was the man behind the Voice of Grime mixtape from back in the day, and that Slimzee cut dubs of some of his very first productions? Scratcha might be on the crest of a wave right now, but he's done his time.
Keep tuned to FACT for an interview with Scratcha where he talks his past, his experience in engineering for Wiley, Trim and more, and why Roska's a cat - 'til then, download his FACT mix which features material from Felix the Housecat, Karizma, Geeneus and Horsepower alongside new dubs by DVA, D-Malice, Roska and more.

FACT mix 65: Various Production
exclusive FACT podcast comes from one of the defining production teams of the 21st century, Various Production.
Famed for their elusive nature, Adam and Ian made a name for themselves blending dubstep's bass-heavy aesthetic (long before everyone and their dog was into dubstep, obviously) with the emotive nature of folk song-writing, and their early self-released 7"s like 'Hater' are still UK bass music staples today. Their first full-length album for XL, The World is Gone, is still a FACT office favourite, and their recent singles for Fire Songs have maybe been the duo's best yet attempts at blurring the lines between spectral vocals and rib-shuddering weight.
The first half of their live performance at FACT's Cargo party this year was pretty much the best straight dubstep set we've seen in ages, and both that and the second half of their set that night - where they paired heavy-duty off-kilter hip-hop with live MCs - come through in their FACT podcast. You've got a batch of new Various tracks here, two collaborations with MC V.E.X., and spots from Rustie, Reso and Gunstab. What's not to like?

Johnny Clark vs MALA/Coki- Sinners/Goblin
Transition's Ringo imprint has a knack for releasing twelves that sell out before we even get a chance to review them, so we thought we'd get in nice and early this time, before the mayhem starts. This time round the label unveils a bit of a coup with both Mala and Coki making a rare double-headed appearance on a twelve graced with all the production savvy and attention to detail you'll have come to expect. Mala re-fixes a Johnny Clark original on the a-side with a pressurised low-end emphasis and neon vibe, omitting tired halfstep formulas in favour of a much more spaced out sound that will make your eyes glaze over - in the best possible sense. Over on the flipside Coki raves it up with a demented synth hook that's been described in some quarters as "Spongebob part 2". You know it's heavy, you know it ain't gonna last - bag it!(at boomkat, here)

Aquatic Lab Sessions Vol. 1
The dubstep virus has spread and mutated over oceans and across continents in the past 5 years. At its furthest point, the virus has reached Austrialia and it's premier dubstep outlet, Aquatic Lab. Label owners Farj and Paul Fraser, perhaps better known as Tectonic's Moving Ninja have assembled a stable of top UK producers mixed with the best Australia and New Zealand have to offer. 'Sessions Vol.1' showcases the talents of new producers Flash, Vista, P-Vans, Twitch and KIla Mega Giga Tera next to established UK steppers Zed Bias, Cotti, Seven, Caspa & Rusko. The set is well balanced between rampant club joints and home listening use, moving from Moving Ninja's ominous beatless opener 'Ankoku Butoh' to the mellow vibes of Flash's 'Right Here' onto runnin' techno-step from Vista and Zed Bias' with forward leaning killer 'Colditz', while outright anthems come on Cotti's dancehall message 'Nah Go Dung Deh' and Caspa & Rusko's 'King George'. Based on their quality values and tune selection, we'd have to rank these guys up next the likes of Tectonic or Tempa for all the Dubstep heads. FACT mix 75: TRG
FACT mix 75 comes from Bucharest's TRG, and showcases his new Hitek House sound.
Cosmin Nicolae by name, you probably know TRG best for his dubstep productions on labels like Tempa, Hotflush and Hessle (his 'Put You Down' was the label's first release, and Martyn's remix on HES004 arguably their most well-known). But judging by his FACT mix, he's currently pushing a housier sound: Karizma, Hot City, Roska and Cajmere feature alongside a host of new TRG productions, and tracks are mixed deep into each other. Plus it ends on 'Trilingual Dance Sexperience', which is such a jam it's unreal.
1. Karizma - Necessary Madness (R2) 2. Seiji - Hohoho (CDR) 3. Roska- Elevated Level (Kicks & Snares) 4. Mystery - Speechless 5. Hot City - No More (Infrasonics) 6. TRG - Now You Know (CDR) 7. Rinse 09 Mixed By N-Type
N-Type mixes are always a good measure of the state of the dubstep rave. He's not got 10 billion bookings and some 76 mix CD's to his name for no good reason. Living at the centre of the scene in a converted bassbin just outside the Rinse studios, N-Type literally lives on dubplates, fed to him by DJs visiting the studios for a mix. You can always tell where he is by the trail of petroleum slime and flammable gasses left in his wake. For the ninth Rinse FM mix he's assembled a line-up of the biggest names in his phonebook, including tracks from - deep breath - Kryptic Minds, Silkie & Kutz, LD, Distance, Emalkay, The Others, Benga, Skream, The Others, Benny Page, The Others, Jakes, Benga, Skream, Benga, Benga, Coki, The Others, N-Type & The Others, Flux Pavillion, Benga and The Others. It's a banger from start to finish and a must for fans of N-Type. (boomkat, buy here)

UNTOLD - Fact mix 58
The latest FACT mix is from arguably the dubstep producer of the year so far, Untold.
Jack Dunning to the ‘rents, Untold first came to our attention in early 2008 with his Kingdom EP on Hessle Audio. Earlier this year he quit his day job in graphic design, and as a producer has gone from strength to strength – turning the promise of that early release into a succession of leftfield 12”s more inventive, intense and danceable than 90% of UK music right now, if not more.
We had a hunch things would go that way from the warning shot that was ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’ earlier in the year. But when we heard ‘Anaconda’ (later collected on a 12” for Hessle with ‘I Can’t Stop’) it was obvious this guy was in the zone. Since then there’s been his remix of Toasty’s ‘Knowledge’, his remix of Ramadanman’s ‘Revenue’, and his forthcoming stunning single for Scuba’s Hotflush label, ‘Just For You’. And that’s not getting in to his own label, Hemlock, which will soon be putting out sometime Mount Kimbie vocalist James Blake’s debut single.
Recently interviewed in depth by Martin Clark, Untold’s FACT mix features ‘Just For You’ and the Pangaea mix of ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’, as well as new material from Hot City, Mount Kimbie, TRG, Ramadanman, LV and more. And we know we say this about loads of our mixes (there’s a reason we ask for them from the people we do, you know?), but this one really is unmissable.
