Young Marble Giants
Rough Trade, Domino, UK

Formed in 1978, the music of Young Marble Giants was constructed around the minimal yet powerful instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham, supporting the young and untrained vocals of Alison Statton. Moxham wrote the majority of the band's songs and his writing was often deceptively simple-seeming, giving them a uniquely fragile yet compelling quality. While signed to UK's Rough Trade Records the youngsters released two EPs, 'Final Day' and 'Testcard' and the seriously acclaimed long player 'Colossal Youth' (a reference to the Early Greek 'Kouroi' marble statues, from which the YMGs took the inspiration for their name). Their releases, few as they may be, have been inspirational to many generations of bands and musicians since, from Peter Buck to Kurt Cobain to The XX. It was therefore welcomed when Moxham emerged from the wilderness to play with his band again and reissue that infamous first album along with the otherwise unobtainable Peel Sessions. It's not often that a band with essentially only one album features in one of our Fireside Chats, but its not often that an album has so much clout, that it is still being talked about thirty years later

Podcast 161: Mount Kimbie

http://www.xlr8r.com/listen/26974/mp3/XLR8R_Podcast_Mount_Kimbie_2010_09_21.mp3

* Words: Shawn Reynaldo

Since quietly dropping a couple of EPs on Hotflush Recordings last year, UK duo Mount Kimbie has shot into the stratosphere, as its recently released debut album, Crooks and Lovers, has taken the whole post-dubstep-future-bass-whatever-it's-called continuum to a whole new audience. Perhaps it's the inclusion of field recordings and other organic sounds, or maybe it's the palpable sense of melancholy in their songs, but the youthful pair has folks practically salivating over their maiden journey to North America, which begins this Friday with a performance at Seattle's Decibel Festival. Over the course of the following week, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos will trek across the continent before heading back across the pond; a full list of tour dates is here. To celebrate their touchdown on American shores, the boys have assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Much like their own music, the mix finds the guys dabbling in dancefloor sonics, but the duo never abandons its love of woozy low-end hum and experimental wanderlust—not that we'd want them to.

02 xxxy "This Much" (Fortified Audio)

17-year-old Kyle Hall has been turning heads since 2007, when he made his debut on Omar-S' FXHE imprint. Just a year later he launched his own label, Wild Oats, and dropped the Worx of Art EP 1. A forthcoming Wild Oats release, The Perfekt Sin, finds Hall sharing the studio with an ensemble of collaborators collectively dubbed "BSMNT City Anymle Kontrol." The group delivers a jazzy, non-quantized live number that will keep your toes tapping, and Hall rounds out the EP with two more solo productions.

Podcast 162: Salem

http://www.xlr8r.com/listen/27211/mp3/XLR8R_Podcast_Salem_2010_09_28.mp3

As spelled out in our current cover story, Midwestern trio Salem is a "gothy/witch-house/dream-crunk/"fucking hipster"/drag-step/worst.band.ever./genius/crack-core/amaaaazing/hiding-behind-fuzz/wigger/fake-black-metal/angelic/homo-thug/Michael Stipe-endorsed/post-juke band from no place in particular." Basically, they've become one of those bands that can be whatever you want them to be; the notion of what exactly Salem is threatens to engulf what Salem's music actually sounds like. So today, on the day the group's debut album, King Night, is being released, we're happy to focus on the latter by presenting Sleep Now My One Little Eye, an exclusive mix that Salem put together for the XLR8R podcast series. Submitted with a qualifier that states "best listened to lying on da floor or bed," the mix is another one of the band's warped journeys through slow-motion sound and lo-fi gloom and doom. Nearly every track—including the unreleased Salem tunes which comprise more than half of the podcast—has been labeled "drag," which we assume means that the band has followed its frequent M.O. and screwed the song into oblivion. It's an interesting trip, and one we certainly recommend taking.

01 Unknown "MOTHER DEAR WHERE R U WHEN I NEED U"
02 Salem "Sores (Drag)"
03 Salem "Amen (Drag)"
04 Salem "Snakes (Drag)"
05 Soulja Boy & Lil B "Gucci Wings/Dat Boy Can Fly (Drag)"
06 Mott the Hoople "Sea Diver (Drag)"
07 Daniel Johnston "Some Things Last a Long Time (Drag)"
08 Salem "Baby Boy (Drag)"
09 Salem "Amen Remix (Drag)"
10 Ricki Lee Jones "We Belong Together (Drag)"
11 Salem "Superstar (Drag)

Live & Mixes - Page 3 Ra246-caribou

RA.246 Caribou
Genre: Electronic, Experimental, Techno
160 kbps | 71:46 min

Topping end-of-year polls is one measure of success. Another is bookings. Take a look at Dan Snaith's 2010 tour dates and you'll know instantly what sort of year the Canadian producer had. The demand and critical acclaim stemmed from Swim, his fifth album as Caribou. The record was his attempt to make "liquid dance music"; nine tracks RA's Derek Miller described as a "mesmeric aural delight." Swim issued Snaith the license to cross the great indie/dance divide: fans of his previous trips through '60s-indebted psychedelia - and the rock press - warmed to his new dancey direction, while those on the other side of the fence welcomed him as one of their own.
Five new and exclusive tracks recorded under the name Daphni adorn this mix, all confirming in their own warm and deliciously lo-fi manner that Snaith is still very much enthralled by the hum and buzz of electronic music.

01. Brant - What Is A Number, That A Man May Know It?
02. Daphni - Yes, I Know
03. The Jellies - Jive Baby On A Saturday Night
04. Hounds Of Hate - Purple Stuff
05. Daphni - Deep Blue
06. Colored Mushroom & The Medicine Rocks - The Route To The Medicine Rocks
07. Daphni - Buck Dance
08. Harmonious Thelonious - Verwobene Muziek
09. Harmonious Thelonious - Mokambo
