So Benji B had a Hyperdub showcase prepared by Kode 9 for his Radio 1 show. It’s not quite the barnstormer that last year’s one on Mary Anne Hobbs’ show was, with individual sets by Darkstar, LV, Zomby, Samiyam, Ikonika and Quarta 330, but you’ve still got a healthy slice of new dubs from the best label in the world.
Especially of note, amongst the new tracks by Ikonika, Cooly G et al and the news that the forthcoming compilation we'd heard about is going to be a double CD, one disc of old Hyperdubs and one of new, are two new untitled pieces by Burial. Remember that guy? Thought you might.
[Edit: Oh, and more news as the show goes on. The five albums planned for release on Hyperdub this year on top of that compilation are by Burial, Kode 9 and Spaceape, Darkstar, Ikonika and King Midas Sound. None of them are actually finished yet, but still, OMG]

Da minha parte, relativa/ à MAH, funciono mais pelo buzz do momento q vou observando em sitios como o dubstep forum. Tipo, esse anterior postei mais por Jakes, outro pelo Cluekid, and so on... Tb tive pra postar um so dedicado às females e tal, mas depois desinteressei-me ao pensar q n ha presentemente nenhuma q tenha assim tanta qualidade.

Few artists can pack 47 tracks into an hour-long mix without it sounding forced and contrived. Fortunately for us (and the latest installment of the XLR8R podcast), Kid606 is one of those who can seamlessly weave together as many tracks as he has for Megachurch Meltdown. Pulling from a collection of current club tracks and old favorites, the man born Miguel Depedro has crafted a bouncy, bass-heavy mix that's as close to an actual night in the club as one can hope to get. "A lot of this stuff I just got recently, and it's only because [the tracks] were made to be pumping DJ tracks that I was able to mix them in so easily," he says. "It's those older tracks that carry a little more weight and have more depth behind them, at least for me, because I've played them so many times I have a personal relationship with them."

Of those favorites, he cites artists like Vex'd, DJ Koze, Drop the Lime, and PJ Pooterhoots ("one of the best producers in S.F. and criminally underrated"), all of whom appear in this techno-meets-dubstep-meets-booty-house mix, alongside newer cuts from the likes of Rustie, Cardopusher, and AC Slater. Less common in Megachurch is his own work. "I think I'm still a little shy about DJing my own stuff," he says to this. "I am just too self-conscious about it, but I love playing people's remixes of me, so there [are] three remixes of songs from my new album, from Acid Jacks, P.O.L. Style, and Doshy."

Dubstepped RadioI’ve started a new podcast focusing on fresh dubstep sounds coming out of the US and Canada and this is the first episode. This is not a standard DJ mix or something you’re going to want to throw on at your next party, this is more of a news or educational program about artists and labels that are doing big things. I introduce each track with a bit of info about the artist like tour dates, forthcoming or recent releases, labels they’ve worked with, and so on. This is why I call it a “radio show.” Hope you like it. I encourage feedback, hit me up by email to snf@dubstepped.net or snfdubstepped on aim.

I’m aiming for a monthly release of this show, so producers and labels send me tunes. I’m also looking for some graphic design help so if you want to design a better logo I’ll link to you and mention your site & name in the show.

I specifically try to play different styles on dubstep in each program. In this show you will hear wobbly club tunes, atmospheric deep dubstep, ragga influenced dubstep, and wobbly hiphop remixes. All about the diversity.

There are too many people to give thanks to but I have to highlight some:

SF family: DJG, Katya (Big Up Mag), Sam Supa, Miro, Bakir, J. Rogers, Rastatronics, Kush Arora, the Surya Dub, Surefire, Redline, and Full Melt crews, and last but definitely not least everyone nicing up the dance.

This is going to be the summer that dubstep exploded. The growth over the past year or so has been rampant with an estimated tenfold more shows in San Francisco so far this year than last year. This is only going to continue in the face of this mixtape due to come out in about a month. I don’t even have the full tracklist but the bits that I’ve heard destined for the mix make me know that this is going to get rinsed everywhere, including grocery store speakers, pop radio stations, and so forth. Whether this is good or bad is up for debate. Personally I love this sound and know that it will keep evolving. I was blown away when I first heard produers like Joker or Gemmy that they didn’t have hiphop MCs queueing to flow over the tracks and now it’s finally happening.

The mixtape is called “Mr Grustle and Tha Russian Present Dubstep LA.” There are at least 6 tracks on it though I’m not sure on the official tracklist. Plastician (rinse.fm, Terrorhythm, Surefire) is mixing the tracks for the mixtape and sampled a bunch of them yesterday on his weekly rinse.fm radio show (download). I got so excited that I’m going to post samples from the set. Some of these are predictable, but some really blew me away, especially the Grouch and Eligh vs Vex’d cut. These previews are low quality with talking over them but I don’t care, give it a listen and take it in.

Dubstepped Radio

I’d like to start off this week with a new episode of dubstepped radio. I’m really excited about this episode, it’s got five styles of dubstep from jazz saxophones to hiphop to wobbly tunes. It’s a pleasure to discuss tunes in a genre as diverse as dubstep, always keeps you on your toes. This episode clocks in at just over 74 minutes with 23 tracks.

There’s a bunch of free music associated with this episode: Juju - Young Girl, Mastodon Tricycle - Lead Chips EP, Kid Simple - Ruthless (promo for Seattle Selections), Dumbsteppaz - Southern Fried Dub, and Elucid - My Mayor is a Billionaire plus Laser Days. Get after those, some serious tunes.

Something interesting is brewing on the fringes of dubstep, and 24-year-old Rob Kemp, better known as Brackles, is right in the thick of it. The London-based DJ has been spinning garage records and wowing crowds with his insane turntable skills since he was 15 years old, but it's his next-level production work that has truly thrust him into the limelight. Singles on Planet Mu, Applepips, Berkane Sol, and Pollen, not to mention high-profile remixes for the likes of Kid Cudi vs. Crookers, Tempa T, and MSTRKRFT, have showcased Brackles' love for skittery, leftfield garage and his ability to make refined dancefloor tunes—you certainly won't find him resorting to cliché bass overloads that have all the subtlety of a chainsaw to the head. Between making music, DJing regularly at places like FWD, and running the Blunted Robots label with partner-in-crime Shortstuff, Brackles isn't exactly long on free time, but we somehow convinced him to put together this exclusive mix for XLR8R. Full of unreleased gems and a few underground classics, the results are absolutely thrilling.
