Unavoidable touchstones in British electronica
Major names in electronica from the British Isles, who are all unavoidable touchstones, will be at the festival with recently released work. This is true of The Chemical Brothers, whose seventh album is about to see the light of day. They will be presenting a completely new show; Dizzee Rascal, who in the blink of an eye has moved from being a young talent of grime to a media star in the UK and a recent winner of a Brit Award; Matthew Herbert, a master of disguise and an alchemist of everyday sounds, with his new project “One Club”; and Hot Chip, who have won over audiences and critics with their recently released new album, “One Life Stand”.


Underground in constant movement

But music in the United Kingdom is not just about stars. In fact, the British underground is musically the most exciting place today. Dizzee Rascal himself was part of this movement until recently. It has always been bubbling under the surface, providing high of doses quality and unceasingly rejuvenating the dance genres in the islands.

This is a trail which joins the dots between the legacy of Jamaican immigrants and the influence of dub, the birth of jungle in London 15 years ago, trip-hop emerging in Bristol, broken beats and two-step, and the muddy sound of grime and the recent explosion of dubstep, which has in turn led to a range of new subgenres which are still in the development phase: wonky, uk funky, funkstep, dubtec, etc.

This scene includes artists as interesting as Joy Orbison, Roska, Zomby, King Midas Sound, Hudson Mohawke, Speech Debelle (winner of the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2009), Goldielocks, the young producers on Glasgow’s Lucky Me label and Mary Anne Hobbs, the guru of urban rhythms, who will all be present at Sonar 2010.

The festival also takes in other high quality approaches receiving broad-based recognition, ranging from the noisist experimentation of Fuck Buttons and Necro Deathmort , to the past perfect, nostalgic and evocative pop of Broadcast, by way of the pure underground flavoured techno of the Sandwell District label.
